Before- consume 20 mins before
During - I always have one after 45 mins on a long run then every 30 mins after that.
When taking it whilst running I calmly sip on half of it make sure it feels ok then have the rest. I’m in tune with my caffeine intake ( 1-2 per day max) so I will generally have a Smart Gel later in a run or if im training later in the day I could have one before or early on.

Caffeine & exercise -Caffeine makes our mind and body feel pretty good in general and the same applies when we exercise - It can help you ‘get in the zone’. Use it very mindfully and be aware that it has a dehydrating affect some balance it out by sipping water or making sure your hydrated pre exercise.
Hydration - If your well hydrated then 60- 80 mins of exercise in normal conditions is not going to be compromised by dehydration. Sipping regularly is recommended - beyond 90 mins more substantial fluid is required you will get knocked around if you have been stupid and let yourself become dehydrated.
